Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom

Wisdom is more than just knowledge; it's a guiding light that illuminates the path of our lives. There is no true wisdom outside of God. We are reminded of this numerous times in the Bible:

"There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD."

 Proverbs 21:30

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

Proverbs 9:10

In Christianity, wisdom is recognized as one of the key gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential for spiritual growth and maturity. What is wisdom? And how is it different than knowledge?

Knowledge is an accumulation of facts, information and/or experiences one has

Wisdom, on the other hand, is knowing HOW to APPLY that knowledge

Though knowledge is a crucial component of wisdom, it alone can not achieve wisdom.

Biblical Wisdom is made up of 2 main elements:

• Knowledge: Facts and information, which by itself can be used for good or evil.

• Righteousness: this is the moral component that we must strive to remain in, in order to keep our actions and character in continuous harmony with the will of God.

The biblical view of wisdom is rich and goes beyond simply knowing facts to applying that knowledge in ways that align with God's will. Isaiah describes the Spirit of the Lord resting upon Jesus the Messiah, who embodies wisdom and understanding.

Isaiah 11:2

"The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—"

In 1 Corinthians 12:8, the Apostle Paul reiterates this idea, stating, "For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit." This reminds us that wisdom is a divine ability bestowed by the Holy Spirit, empowering believers to discern truth in complex situations.

To know Jesus as the Son of God and to accept Him into our lives, is wisdom in action.

The Source of Wisdom

The Bible clearly identifies God as the ultimate source of wisdom. Proverbs 2:6 emphasizes, "For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." This indicates that true wisdom isn’t something we learn in classrooms or acquire through experience; it is a profound gift we must actively seek.

James 1:5 encourages believers to ask God for wisdom through prayer: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all." This verse assures us that God is ready to provide wisdom to those who earnestly seek it.

The Foundation of Wisdom: The Fear of the Lord

Psalm 111:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding." This implies that a sincere relationship with God is essential for obtaining true wisdom. "Fear of the Lord" does not imply terror but rather a deep respect for God's authority.

When we approach God humbly and express the desire for His guidance, we open the door to receive His wisdom. This relationship alters how we perceive the world, empowering us to make choices in line with God's desires.

The Distinction Between Spiritual and Worldly Wisdom

In 1 Corinthians 1:18, Paul contrasts spiritual wisdom with worldly wisdom: "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." This distinction is vital. Worldly wisdom tends to rely on human reasoning, while spiritual wisdom is founded in God’s revelation through Christ.

To illustrate, worldly wisdom may tell you to prioritize personal gain, but spiritual wisdom encourages you to act selflessly, reflecting God’s love. This is especially evident during times of crisis, where believers might choose to help others, embodying grace and compassion rather than seeking to elevate themselves.

Knowing the nature and source of wisdom is only half the journey. We must also consider how to apply wisdom in our everyday lives:

Seek God thru prayer and study Scripture. set aside time for god every day!!

As suggested in James 1:5, make it a point to pray regularly for wisdom, especially during tough decisions. This practice leads to clarity and direction when facing life's challenges.
